Teeth whitening before and After

What happens before Teeth whitening treatment ?

Many of you may have considered teeth whitening products or indeed considered in-office treatments. However it’s important to know what you are embarking on before considering treatment, as you contemplate this exciting journey, there are some important things to note about the preparation process, not everyone is a good candidate for the procedure;  individuals with dental restorations, gum disease, receding gumlines or worn enamel should speak with a dentist, either by having a consultation or by asking if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure during your regular check-ups. Teeth whitening gel won’t work on veneers or crowns, however before having veneers you might be advised to have whitened your teeth prior to the procedure to ensure that you get the perfect shade match.

What happens during the teeth whitening treatment?

So, you have decided to go for it and take the plunge, good on you! Think Bizzle and Smile are here for one thing and one thing only; effective and safe teeth whitening. Depending on whether you have decided to go with a professional service or a home teeth whitening kit there will be some similarities. First, let’s look at professional treatments; then we will consider a home whitening kit, our own; what a shameless plug!

Professional teeth whitening

The teeth whitening professional will clean your teeth making sure that they are free from any debris or plaque. Once your teeth are clean the mouth will be prepped, some professionals will use cheek retractors to allow good separation of the lips to avoid any of the gel getting onto the soft tissue. The gumline with be prepped with gingival or gum barrier, this is usually a blue waxy substance that is cured and harden by cold light to form a protective barrier, it’s important weather you are in-office or at home that the gumline is protected.

Once the prep is done you are ready for the application, in the USA dentists will typically  use Hydrogen peroxide between 15% to 43%. Maximum results are achieved by combining Hydrogen peroxide with a high powered Laser that helps accelerate and activate the gel giving great results within 15 to 20 minutes.

Home teeth whitening Kit

Now this is where we come in, we offer a wide range of teeth whitening products for professionals as well as home teeth whitening kits and top up gels. For our home teeth whitening kits we offer gels from 22% carbamide peroxide  to 44% Carbamide peroxide.

Before any home teeth whitening occurs the teeth should be free from debris and plaque. We recommend that you make sure the teeth are free of any food by brushing them. However, this should be without Toothpaste, a tooth brush and water will suffice, we advise this method to ensure that the process of oxidisation occurs on the surface of the tooth and not with your Toothpaste of choice.

If you choose our Dream Gleam kit you will be provided with cheek retractors in the same capacity as a professional treatment. All of our gels come with barrier to protect the gums during the whitening process.  Our Dream Gleam kit comes with trays, as well as a 16 LED light with a mouth piece. We believe that variety is the spice of life so we have given the option to whiten without trays, which means you can use the retractors for both the prep and the whitening process, or if you want to get on with your daily tasks you can whitening with the trays and the LED and use the retractors just for prep.

After 30 to 60 minutes you will see visibly whiter teeth. Unlike professional whitening treatments full results will be seen after a minimum of 5 sessions. Be assured that you can get great results with Think Bizzle and Smile Teeth whitening gel; Don’t believe me? See some of our teeth whitening before and after pictures for yourselves.

How will my teeth’ colour change after teeth whitening?

After the whitening procedure you can expect to see immediate improvements in your smile depending on the process you can see improvements from 5 to 10 shades whiter . However it’s important to recognise that results will vary from individual to individual due to a number of factors. The types of stains that you have place a major part in the overall teeth whitening results, Let’s take a look at the types of stains and what types of teeth whitening gel works best.

External stains

External stains are known as extrinsic stains, which appear on the surface of the tooth and are usually a result of life style, with food, drink and nicotine playing a major role with these types of stains. Red wine and coffee is a favourite of many, however, these drinks over a sustained period of time can be the primary cause of discoloration of the teeth and surface stains. In addition to this if an individual has a build-up of plaque this in itself can be a stain magnet with plaque build-up becoming stained over time.

Internal stains

Internal stains are known as intrinsic stains and are found within the surface of the tooth an can be caused by a variety of reasons such as age, as we get older the tooth enamel tends to thin showing the dentin within the tooth which is  naturally yellow in colour. Some individuals have a darker shade than others. However a good level of whitening can be achieved over a longer period of time with a lower percentage of carbamide peroxide such as 22% concentration.

Why do my Teeth look Patchy after the Bleaching process?

If you have just embarked on having your teeth whitened the last thing you expect to see is white patches, streaks or lines. However, this is completely normal and you have nothing to worry about. As teeth whitening gel either contains or converts to hydrogen peroxide , the temporary effect is dehydration that causes little flecks of white patches; this usually dissipates within 20 to 30 minutes of the treatment and you will be left with the final results.

What about home kits for teeth whitening?

Over the years there has been a rise in popularity in home teeth whitening kits, with the accessibility of home bleaching kits increasing within the USA after the 2014 ruling by the FDA that over the counter and home teeth whitening kits are classified as a cosmetic treatment and not a drug. As consumers appetite for all things cosmetic accelerated in the age of Instagram and Tik Tock so did the demand for whiter than white teeth. Here at Think Bizzle and Smile we pride ourselves on creating high quality and high performing whitening gel, our most complete and most popular kit is our Dream Gleam pro giving you more options and variations of gel to help you achieve the best teeth whitening results. How long do whitening results last?

There is no permanent solution, after full results have been achieved you can expect your new smile to be maintained for 12 to 18 months. However, as we mentioned before lifestyle choices and highly pigmented foods such as deep tomato based sauces, coffee, red wine and tea all take there toll and result in your teeth becoming off white in as little as 2 to 3 months if you fail to keep a good dental routine. If you notice that the results are starting to fade you can opt to whiten at home with one of our refill options.

What should I avoid eating or drinking after teeth whitening? (Post-care recommendations)

Within 48 hours of your treatment you should avoid highly pigmented, acidic foods and drinks, teeth can be sensitive and prone to staining after whitening. It is advice that you avoid the following.

Drinks to avoid

Red wine, sugary sodas, coffee, tea and alcohol. All of these drinks are highly pigmented and will result in staining. All fruit juices should be avoided due to the sugar content and natural occurring acids found in most fruits.

Foods to avoid

Tomato’s and tomato based sauces, Sugar beets or beet root, all fruit should be avoided including any that maybe considered low in sugar or low on the glycaemic  index. If you’re partial to a curry, unfortunately you will have to give them a miss for a while, curries usually contain Turmeric and other staining spices

Can you use teeth whitening kits with braces

The plain and simple answer is no, if you have invested in having braces or Invisalign your dentist may recommend before the initial treatment that you may benefit from teeth whitening. However, it is recommended that this occurs once your braces are removed or you complete the Invisalign treatment. Whether you opt for a home kit with or in office your newly aligned and whitened teeth will give you a brighter smile.
